Relocation Guide

Moving from India to Portugal

Indian professionals and retirees moving to Portugal use the D8 for remote work and the D7 for passive income. What is different from India: you apply through the Portuguese visa centre in India, Indian documents are apostilled by the MEA, savings move under the LRS limit, and India does not allow dual citizenship.

Updated 1 October 2026

Quick answer

Indian citizens can move to Portugal on the D8 digital nomad visa (€3,680 a month from remote work) or the D7 (passive income from €920 a month). Apply through the Portuguese visa centre in India, apostille documents through the MEA, and transfer funds within the LRS limit of USD 250,000 per person per year. India and Portugal have a double tax treaty.

What is different from India

MEA apostille and PCC

Indian documents, including your Passport Seva police clearance certificate, are apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs; English documents may still need translation into Portuguese.

LRS and proof of funds

Portugal asks for evidence of means and often a Portuguese bank account. Remittances from India run under the USD 250,000 LRS limit per person per year, with tax collected at source above a threshold.

Citizenship versus residence

India does not allow dual citizenship, so many Indian families use Portuguese residence (and later permanent residence) rather than naturalising.

Step by step from India

  1. Choose D7 or D8

D8 for remote employment or freelance work for non-Portuguese clients; D7 for rental, pension or dividend income.

  2. Indian documents

PCC, degrees and civil documents, apostilled by the MEA and translated.

  3. NIF, bank and accommodation

Get a Portuguese tax number, open an account and secure accommodation.

  4. Apply through the visa centre

Submit the national visa application and biometrics in India.

  5. AIMA appointment

Travel to Portugal and complete the residence permit with AIMA.

Documents and legalisation

India is not in the Apostille Convention, so public documents need the full chain: attestation by the issuing authority and the foreign ministry, then legalisation by the Portugal embassy or consulate. Translate them with a sworn translator where required.

You will usually need a police certificate from India and from every other country you have lived in recently.

Where to apply

Apply for the national (D) visa at the Portuguese consulate or its visa centre in your country of legal residence, then complete the residence permit with AIMA in Portugal.
