Portugal D7 vs D8 Visa Explained (General Guide)

Portugal's D7 passive-income visa and D8 digital nomad visa compared: who each suits, the income requirement, accommodation, family and next steps.

Portugal offers two popular routes for people who want to live in the country without a Portuguese employer. The D7 visa is designed for people with regular passive income, such as pensions, rental income or investment returns. The D8 visa is designed for remote workers employed by, or providing services to, entities outside Portugal.

Both routes require proof of a stable income at or above a minimum level set by Portuguese law, which is linked to the national minimum wage and is updated over time. Check the current figure with the consulate or an adviser rather than relying on numbers quoted online.

Applicants typically also need accommodation in Portugal, health insurance, a clean criminal record and, in most cases, a Portuguese tax number and bank account. The D8 route additionally requires evidence of the remote work relationship, such as an employment contract or service agreements.

Both visas are applied for at a Portuguese consulate, followed by a residence permit application in Portugal. Eligible family members can usually join through family reunification, and time spent as a lawful resident may count towards permanent residence or citizenship under the general rules in force.

Tax residence is a separate question: living in Portugal under either visa can make you tax resident, with consequences for your worldwide income. This article is general information — confirm current requirements and tax treatment with a qualified adviser.
