Relocation Guide
Moving From Mexico To Spanje
Mexicans moving to Spain have an advantage most nationalities do not: Spanish citizenship can be requested after only two years of legal residence, and Mexico allows dual nationality. The digital nomad and non-lucrative visas are the usual first step, applied for at the Spanish consulate in Mexico.

Quick answer
Mexican citizens can move to Spain on the digital nomad visa (200% of the Spanish minimum wage from non-Spanish work) or the non-lucrative visa (€28,800 a year in funds), applying at the Spanish consulate for their district in Mexico. As Ibero-American nationals, they can apply for Spanish nationality after two years of legal residence, and Mexico permits dual nationality.

What is different from Mexico
Two years to Spanish nationality
Nationals of Ibero-American countries, including Mexico, can apply for Spanish nationality after two years of legal and continuous residence, against ten years for most others. Spain has also agreed dual nationality with Mexico, so you would not lose Mexican nationality.
Apostille in Mexico
Mexico is in the Apostille Convention. Federal documents are apostilled by the federal authorities and state documents (such as birth certificates) by the issuing state; your federal criminal record certificate also needs an apostille.
No visa for visits
Mexican citizens can visit Spain for up to 90 days in 180 without a visa, which helps with scouting trips; the residence visa is still applied for from Mexico.

Frequently asked questions
Can Mexicans get Spanish citizenship in two years?
Yes. Mexican nationals can apply after two years of legal, continuous residence in Spain, rather than the usual ten.
Will I lose my Mexican nationality?
No. Mexico permits dual nationality, and Spain does not require Ibero-American nationals to renounce it.
Does time on a digital nomad visa count towards citizenship?
Legal residence generally counts. We check that your permit type and any absences do not break continuity.
Is there a tax treaty between Mexico and Spain?
Yes, a comprehensive double tax treaty is in force.
