Residence by investment (RBI) is the umbrella term for immigration routes that grant a residence permit in exchange for a qualifying investment. "Golden visa" is the popular, media-friendly name for the same idea, used most often for European and Gulf programmes.
In practice the label tells you little. What differs between programmes is the type of investment accepted (property, funds, business, government bonds or deposits), the minimum amount, how long the investment must be held and whether it can be financed.
Stay requirements vary widely. Some permits can be maintained with little or no time in the country, while others expect regular presence. These rules are separate from the residence needed later for permanent residence or naturalisation.
Long-term outcomes also differ. Some routes can count towards permanent residence or citizenship under the general rules, others are renewable indefinitely without a clear path, and some have been closed or reformed at short notice.
When comparing options, look past the headline figure: model the total family cost, the renewal conditions and the tax consequences of spending time in the country. Programme terms change frequently, so check current rules with an adviser.
